26th World Mining Congress 2023 meets in Brisbane 26th - 29th June 2023

Australia not only has abundant minerals and energy resources but also world-class expertise in exploration, extraction and processing. Australia is a top five producer of every key major mineral. Many of the world’s largest mining companies, such as BHP have their origins in Australia.

WMC 2023 is taking place at a critical time as countries realise the challenge they face in meeting their commitments to net-zero emissions by 2050 while the global push for sustainability intensifies.

This challenge presents a huge opportunity for Australia as a mineral and energy resource superpower.

The World Mining Congress (WMC) is the leading international forum for the global mining and resource industries. The Congress:

  • promotes and supports scientific and technical cooperation in the sustainable development of natural mineral and energy resources, and
  • facilitates a world-wide exchange of information regarding best practices and emerging technologies in mining sciences, technologies, economics, mining health and safety, social performance and environmental protection
  • The event brings together extraction companies, suppliers, technology providers, researchers and consultants presenting a unique opportunity to meet, to discuss current challenges and to build new partnerships and relationships

Ecuador strikes the world's biggest 'debt for nature' deal to protect the Galápagos Islands

Ecuador has converted $1.6 billion (€1.5 billion) of debt into a loan which will free up millions for conservation in the Galápagos Islands.

The deal, announced on Tuesday 9 May, is the largest of its kind ever made. It is known as a ‘debt for nature’ swap.

“The world’s biggest ocean-friendly debt swap is coming together in Ecuador to protect its unique natural resources,” says Pablo Arosemena Marriott, Minister of Economy and Finance.

“This strategy decreases public debt, boosts fiscal stability, and creates opportunities to address basic needs like healthcare and education.”

Member News: Latin Resources launch Lithium Valley project in Brazil

Latin Resources managing director Chris Gale is aiming to emulate the success of Sigma Lithium’s Grota do Cirilo project in Brazil in a bid to build the production potential of the company’s Salinas project.

Mr Gale stood alongside Sigma chief executive officer and co-chair Ana Cabral-Gardner this morning as she rang the opening bell at the Nasdaq market site in New York to celebrate the launch of the ground-breaking Lithium Valley Brazil initiative. It is a Brazilian Government-backed collaboration aimed at pursuing a more sustainable source of lithium.

The alliance features four major companies – Sigma, Latin, Atlas Resources and Lithium Ionic – which all have significant projects in the Brazilian State of Minas Gerais. The initiative is aimed at attracting capital markets and private investments in the lithium battery supply chain, while streamlining the development and construction of projects in the lithium mining and processing industries.

Red metal rising: Argentina sets lofty sights on global copper top 10

Argentina, known better for its Malbec than its mining, has its sights set on becoming a top ten copper producer by 2030, with an investor friendly stance luring global players like Glencore (LON:GLEN) and Lundin Mining to its mountainous north.

The South American country has a pipeline of copper projects that could produce 793,000 tonnes a year by the end of the decade, government forecasts show, well below neighboring No. 1 producer Chile but near big players like Australia and Zambia.

While a lofty goal - Argentina produces no copper currently after its last working mine closed in 2018 - it could position the country as an important new supplier as demand globally for the metal rises along a global electrification push.

Peru wants to seize lithium 'window of opportunity', says Minister

Peru's economy minister on Thursday said "conditions were being established" to develop lithium mining projects in the country, a week after Chile launched a plan to boost state control of the industry.

"A window of opportunity has opened and we want to take advantage of it," said Economy Minister Alex Contreras, saying that there was "a lot of interest" in speeding up development in Peru as decisions in other countries were spooking investors.

The world's second largest copper producer, Peru currently has a lithium exploration project in the region of Puno, on the border with Bolivia, run by Macusani Yellowcake, a subsidiary of Canada's American Lithium Corp
