Panama is an strategic location for international trade, anchored by the heavily trafficked Panama Canal shipping route and recently expanded international Airport. It also an important destination for mining investments. Mining company First Quantum Minerals which also operates mines in Australia, owns giant copper mine Cobre Panama, one of the 6 top world top producers, with a massive 900,000 tons projected for 2021. In May 6, Panama's Electoral Court declared opposition candidate Laurentino Cortizo, a 66-year-old cattleman who studied business administration in Texas and former Agriculture Minister, the next President of Panama.
HE Marcelino Aviles
Career diplomat of Panama since 2006. Represented his country at a diplomatic level in Peru, Israel, international meetings and is the First Resident Ambassador to Australia since November 2018. In the Ministry of Foreign Affairs he has worked in various areas such as: Foreign policy, international organisations, economic relations, administration, Protocol and State Ceremonial. He has been head of the Bilateral-Multilateral department concerning South-South cooperation and triangular projects, as well as scholarships and student exchange.
